Let me get this out of the way first: AI writing tools are not going to write the content for you.
I tested dozens of AI writers and the content is mediocre at best.
However, I do use AI as an aid to:
- Conduct in-depth research
- Find more inspiration in relevant topics
- Possibly find underserved keywords and then use the KGR method
- Overcome writer’s block
- Guidelines
My experience with AI writing is that the content is rather thin, usually soulless, and simply cannot recreate the emotional touch humans add to high-quality blog posts.
I am not saying that my blog posts are the greatest, especially in a language that’s not my native tongue. But you’ll notice that all my articles or guides are written from my personal experience and/or perspective.
AI Writing Tools I Use
The list is small:
- ChatGPT on Mac (free)
- Perplexity AI (free)
- Koala Writer (paid)
- NotebookLM By Google (free, but in BETA by the time of writing)
I am going to ignore NotebookLM here because Google has a tendency to kill products faster than you can change pants. However, I do hope they will stick around with this one.
Reasons Why You Should Not Use AI For Blogging
If have to make a shortlist, here they are:
- They can’t write entire blog posts of good quality
- Quantity over quality
- They are not replacements for human writers
- Lack of depth
I have met some serious bloggers experimenting with it and some pumped out 1000s of articles per week. Gaining them massive growth spurs. For a month or two, before it got tanked by Google and other search engines.
This was purely a test whether niche bloggers would stand a chance against new methods and that eased my mind that quantity will never be equivalent to quality.
It showed again that AI writers cannot be a replacement for writers because lots of AI generated content lacks depth, personal perspective and emotions.
How I Use AI For Blogging
It’s not a secret that AI can improve workflow, pace and speed up research. And that’s exactly what I am using it for.
My idea of making it an integral part of your niche blog efforts would go like:
- Find long tail keywords
- Pop those keywords into ChatGPT or Perplexity in the form of a question
- Possibly (but not needed) head over to your premium AI writing tool like Koala
- Let AI compose your outlines, and paragraphs and use the generated content to rewrite in your own words
- Add more facts, perspective and personal experience to the blog post
That’s how I do it. For more complicated blog posts or content that requires a bit of research.
Just don’t start blogging about dogs when you don’t have one.
AI can spit out facts, yes, but how are you going to write for a human audience when you can’t even add your own experience to it?
Biggest Pros Using AI For Content
You can save a lot of time, hence money. In the sense that you work faster, research faster and probably can avoid writer’s block.
You can write in larger quantities. I am referring to working on multiple blog posts at the same time. I often start writing 3-6 posts simultaneously and swap between subjects if there’s a lightbulb moment in what to research first to improve the content.
The ideation phase is easier. When I launched my first niche blog 15 years ago or so, I often struggled to find enough content ideas that made sense. Now, tools like Perplexity make it a breeze to never run out of ideas.
Biggest Cons Using AI For Content
More than once, I asked a question in Perplexity, ran it through ChatGPT to discover that one was completely wrong.
Always double, or even triple fact-check what’s been written and verify it by looking up the top 10 competitors.
AI has not been as accurate as most people tend to believe.
Final Note
Yes, I use AI writing tools. As an aid to speed up my workflow but none of my blog posts are AI written. They assist me in crafting better content.
Always keep the following in mind: Write for people, not for search engines.
You can achieve great results if your SEO is onpoint and the content is targeted to an audience that can resonate with your passions, situations or is simply looking for a solution from an expert in the field.
Whatever you do with the AI generated content, always proofread and fact check.
